Fake drugs supplied to hospitals in J& K

THE drug control department of Jammu and Kashmir has found that a counterfeit version of an antibiotic was supplied to several government hospitals in Srinagar, jeopardising the lives of many patients.
The scam came to light recently after the drug controller took samples of Maximizen ( amoxicillin trihydrate), manufactured by a company at Solan in Himachal Pradesh, for examination.
The drug is manufactured by Affy Parenterals in Solan and distributed by Jammu- based Lifeline Pharmaceutical Traders and Surgicals in the state.
Affy Parenterals, however, said the company has been wrongly involved in the fake drug case. “ We have never signed any contract or supplied any pharmaceutical products to any government hospital in Jammu and Kashmir,” an official of the firm said.
The company further said it manufactured the brand for retail sale and not for hospital supply as mentioned in the report.
The investigation report said: “ The samples failed in the identification test, and the contents of amoxicillin in the samples were found nil.” The drug is supplied to associated hospitals of the Government Medical College ( GMC), Srinagar.
Now the department has taken antibiotic injections for tests. “ We have sent them to Jammu, and the report is expected to come soon,” said an official.
Minister for medical education Taj Mohideen said the issue has now taken a serious turn as Affy has not manufactured the brand.
“ Who are these people selling fake medicine in the name of reputed companies? They cannot play with the lives of people and get away with it,” he said.
